Madison, Indiana

FountainMadison, Indiana, is a thriving community of 12,700 people who take pride in the fact that 133 downtown blocks have received National Historic Landmark status from the United States Department of the Interior. Its historic architecture, its focus on the Ohio River, and its bustling Main Street together with its cosmopolitan outlook explain why Woodburn, Kyle & Company has remained in Madison since our founding here in 1976.

The city was founded in 1809, growing rapidly because of lively riverboat traffic. Although Madison was the terminus of the first railroad in Indiana, after the mid 1850s Madison went into an economic decline leaving its architecture largely untouched by "improvements."

In the 1960s, the preservation movement took hold in Madison with the restoration of the Shrewsbury House and the incorporation of Historic Madison, Inc. Additional properties were restored. With almost the entire downtown intact, Madison was selected one of the three cities to become a Main Street Pilot Project Community by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the mid-1970s. This project would test the relationship between preservation and economic development.

With its expansive riverfront, Madison is an ideal setting for festivals. The annual Madison Chautauqua of the Arts packs the downtown and the riverfront with hundreds of booths offering juried art, music, and food.

Ribberfest is an annual BBQ event sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society which brings together the people of Madison and ‘foodies’ from all over. The BBQ leads into an evening of entertainment at Bicentennial Park, our new amphitheater on the river.

The Unlimited class of hydroplanes has been racing on the Ohio River since 1950 and inspired the movie Madison, starring Jim Caviezel. This race attracts thousands of visitors who crowd the riverfront for the annual Madison Regatta the first weekend of July. Our sponsor this year is Lucas Oil, the same company that named the new stadium for the Indianapolis Colts football team.

In 1958 Madison became the backdrop for a movie about life in a small town, except that it had big stars playing the roles of everyday people in Some Came Running. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, the film starred Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Shirley MacLaine, Martha Hyer, with small appearance as an extra by our own Peter Woodburn. Today, Peter helps to introduce the movie whenever it appears on Turner Broadcasting Network.

So, Madison is no ordinary small town. Nationally recognized for its beauty, during World War II, our Main Street became the Main Street for everyone. A twelve-minute film depicting Madison as "The Town" was produced by Hollywood and used by the government to remind the troops overseas and everyone at home why we were fighting.

Woodburn, Kyle & Company principals have been active in Madison for many years, and we have developed an insight from our involvement that we bring to our consulting. "Vision. Momentum. Success."
